People believe cigars were invented by the ancient Mayans. They would wrap tobacco in a plantain leave and smoke it.  The Spanish word “cigarro” probably was an adaptation of silk’ar, the Mayan term for smoking. Even if you look for the history of cigarettes, you will be able to find that Christopher Columbus in his arrival to the New World discover tobacco.

In our days, we know Cigarette smoking is very addictive and have long term health effects.

Cigarettes have chemicals such as nicotine that can make a person addicted. When the nicotine fits into the acetylcholine receptors, the body releases dopamine, the “feel good” brain chemical. When the dopamine goes away, people begin craving another cigarette.

According to CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable disease, disability, and death in the United States. Nearly 40 million U.S. adults still smoke cigarettes, and an estimated 2.55 million middle and high school students use at least one tobacco product, including e-cigarettes.

Current cigarette smoking is higher among people aged 45 to 64 years. Millennials smoke less than older generations and Gen Z smoke less than Millennials.

It means that young generations are aware of the consequences of smoking. Millennials and Gen Z, especially Gen Z, are trying to avoid the dark side of smoking.

Probably, young generations do not see “cool” to smoke or just do not want to take a risk because they know well how a cigarette can affect them.

It is hard to quit smoking, but it is not impossible. People who want to quit have to stay focused on their goal. Also, they can find a support group that can help them to understand that they are not alone or they can see a doctor to find a solution and get the right treatment.
